Croatian Leader Suspends Army Ties with Israel

(MENAFN) Zoran Milanovic announced on Monday that he has ordered the suspension of all cooperation between the Croatian Armed Forces (OSRH) and the Israeli military, citing what he described as breaches of international humanitarian law.

In a social media statement, Milanovic said that “because of the unacceptable conduct of the Israeli army and the unprecedented violation of all norms of international humanitarian law,” he had instructed in May of last year “the termination of all cooperation between the OSRH and the Israeli army,” applying to all Croatian service members. He also called on the government to “halt any form of trade in weapons and military equipment with Israel.”

Milanovic added that in a recent phone conversation, he explicitly warned Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic that “any form of military cooperation with Israel would be unacceptable.”

The statement came ahead of a planned official visit by Defense Minister Ivan Anusic to Israel, where he was scheduled to meet with representatives of Israeli defense companies and officials from the Directorate for International Defense Cooperation in the Israel Ministry of Defense. Milanovic emphasized that, as commander-in-chief of the OSRH, “the OSRH will not cooperate with the Israeli army in any way, now or in the future.”

He further stressed that to avoid “any harm to the Republic of Croatia,” OSRH personnel “will not participate in any way in the implementation of any agreement, contract or arrangement with the Israeli army or the Israeli defense industry.” Milanovic warned that such agreements “would therefore be unenforceable and harmful for Croatia” and urged the government to “halt all planned agreements, contracts or arrangements that would include the purchase of weapons and military equipment from Israel.”
